Lawrie's Final Journey with PAA
Lawrie's friends at PAA felt it was appropriate that Lawrie rested on PAA's memorial page along with some of the pets he had seen come into the shelter that he and his darling wife Betty founded many years ago.
Undoubtedly Lawrie will remember the faces of some of his old pals on these pages .. Lawrie would have seen them go home with their new loving families and like Lawrie have now come home to PAA and rest amongst friends.

Our Boy Maverick
Died: 10th August 2009
Back in October 1996 we were looking for a new pet for our new house .. having a scout through out the dogs in the pens at the old PAA this quiet black dog just followed us around in the pen and sat down on our foot when we stopped and we joked ha ha he has picked us and that is how we found our boy Maverick.
This quiet assuming bundle of joy had a bit of a destructive side .. garden chairs and tables .. hoses you name it if it was there it was chewed but after a bit of Tender Loving Care and training he bacame our angel but hated his bath time with a passion.
When the new PAA opened we went back and found another pup to keep the boy company a darling red cattle X we called Molly and these 2 have been insepareable ever since.
Well old age and a few medical problems caught up with Maverick over the past few years and him being a big dog the arthritis finally caught up in his last months .. he brought us soo much joy and a few tantrums and tears over the years .. Rest in Peace my dear dear pal and Molly misses you heaps.

My Beloved Molly
Died: Saturday 16th April 2011 (aged 13)
We found our darling little Red Cattle Dog X puppy Molly when the new shelter opened up to keep our other pup Maverick company.
These 2 got on like a house on fire best of buddies since day 1 and done everything together Molly was an absolute gem of a girl easily trained and smart as a tack .. typical cattle dog and loved the tennis ball .. squeaky ball or any ball for that fact.
Molly was devastated when her buddy of 11 years passed on but she loved her hydrobath at the PAA every second Saturday if it was not raining.
Rest in peace my sweetheart You and Maverick are back together again.
Thank you
Alan Bardsley

Please find attached a lovely story written by my husband about our darling dog King .. my husband adopted King from Peninsula Animal Aid in 1994 .. after so many years we have just said good-bye to our dear boy King yesterday.
We wanted to let you know how much that beautiful dog enriched all our lives.
Thank you

In June 1994 I went to the animal Peninsula Animal Aid shelter to find a puppy .. my intention was to pick the strongest and most alert puppy there.
There was a litter of Ridgeback X puppies that were separated from their mother at about 4 weeks of age .. so they were reasonably healthy but not 100%.
There were several that were very playful and quite alert which is what I was looking for .. however the one that caught my eye was the smallest and the quietest.
He did not have the energy or the strength of his brothers and sisters but he had a look on his face that I will never forget.
He had a look that said I will love you unconditionally if you take me home .. on my way back home I thought to myself I may not have taken the brightest most alert puppy but I have taken the right puppy for me.
|
The first few days at his new home was a tough time for King .. he was named after the greatest rugby league player ever Wally Lewis .. he had kennel cough and he was pretty sick.
At one point he could not hold his head up on his own .. the Vet said that he needed to keep his fluids up so I used a syringe to squirt water in his mouth and fed him mushy dog food by spoon .. I did this for about three days and nights till he was strong enough to feed himself.
By August King was about 12 weeks old and he and I were living in a small house that was not adequately fenced .. one day I arrived home from work to find he had dug his way out of the enclosure under the house.
I walked around the neighborhood calling him and calling him but he did not come .. I kept looking for him but gave up after a few days .. I thought someone must have taken him because he never strayed far from home.
|
Three weeks passed and I had given his leash .. dishes and food away thinking that I would never see King again and that I would not be getting another dog anytime soon .. arriving home from work you can imagine my surprise to see King waiting for me in the garage.
I got out of the car and he almost knocked me over when he ran to me .. when we had both calmed down a bit .. I checked him over to find scratches on his face.
He had clearly come a long way as his paws were red raw .. It was then at around three months of age I knew I had a very special puppy.
King knew he was not allowed on the carpet but he also knew that my girlfriend (now wife) would let him crawl to her for petting when I was not looking.
I would get up and see him run back to the kitchen and he would look up at me with a look that said I was not on the carpet I have been here the whole time.
|
 |
We have had three children and whenever my wife was pregnant King seemed to know because he was more gentle and always stayed close by her as if to protect her .. King seemed to take on the role of family security guard and he took his work very seriously.
His bark was far worse that his bite .. mainly because he did not have a bite but he did not need one .. as an adult dog.
|
King could give the impression that he could eat you in 30 seconds flat .. the ridge on his back made him look mean but he never hurt anyone in his life.
In 1997 my eldest daughter was about 12 months old and one afternoon was sitting on the grass with her Mum when a snake approached her .. before my wife had a chance to pick my daughter up King had the snake by it's tail and was shaking it .. he continued shaking the snake till he was sure it was dead .. all in a days work for our Head of Security.
More recently King had a few health problems .. many of which an ordinary dog would have succumbed to such as heart worm and the loss of one eye .. we never found out what happened to his eye but he injured it somehow and the Vet tried to treat it but eventually had to remove it.
It was arthritis that got him in the end .. his hips and legs were failing and after fifteen years we knew it was time to say goodbye to a very special part of our family .. we were all there with him .. holding him .. all of us crying uncontrollably.
One day we will be ready to get another dog and we will come back to Peninsula Animal Aid .. but for now we remember King .. the best dog that ever lived.

Jinx Heselden
Died: December 25th 2009
I do not know if you will remember my beautiful Jinx .. I adopted him from you about 5 years ago from PAA.
He was an older black Persian that had been badly neglected .. he had to have all his fur clipped off and accidently got cut by the vet and had to have stitches in .. it seemed he was having a real bad trot.
Then he also had to have a few teeth removed as they were in bad condition .. we adopted Jinx after my two 16 year old cats passed away.
He has been the love of my life and turned out to be an amazing cat.
Let me tell you though he was the most spoilt cat ever and certainly thought he had hit the jackpot here.
He would only eat cooked chicken and his eucinuba mature dry food.
He run the house and even the dogs knew not to mess with him.
He will be sadly missed
Kindest regards
Leanne Heselden

KAHLI
Died: 26th March 2009 6 years old
A most gorgeous 6 year old German Shepherd is coming in we were all told at the shelter .. she had grown up with children and has been with a Jack Russell .. Kahli had been a well loved dog.
Kahli's owners had moved house and it was not too long before they found out Kahli had contacted allergy problems at the new property .. it was the Gum trees {eucalyptus} .. so the family needed to find her a new family as soon as possible.
Kahli arrived at the refuge on Monday the 23th March 2009 .. it was only days and a lovely family came forward to offer Kahli a home and love .. her future was looking great once again.
Kahli was to leave the shelter on Saturday 28th March 2009 .. sadly this was never to be .. on the 26th March darling Kahli became ill from a twisted bowel and past away.
A dog only has a few years of life on this earth and for some reason in only days you feel you have known the pet for years and the adoption becomes personal to the volunteers in a refuge .. so the success is contagious to all involved.
The words we all love to hear is someone announcing .. Put Adopted on Kahli's Pen .. but then to loose a friend is devastating .. we still have to say Goodbye Darling .. your new home was not what we had in mind but it is most certainly a wonderful forever home.

PHARAOH
Died: August 2002 15 years old
I am sure many of the volunteers will remember our dear boy .. like many of the shelter dogs he was found wondering the streets .. he was very skinny and covered in fleas .. I was volunteering at PAA at the time and I fell in love instantly .. it was soon after Pharaoh was diagnosed with testicular cancer and we were told he was beyond treatment .. Pharaoh the Pharaoh Hound came home with me for palliative care for what was thought to be only a couple of months .. our dear boy went on to live for another two and a half years.
Pharaoh and I were so close .. the best of friends .. he always knew what I was thinking even when no-one else did .. since his passing I have been lost without him .. even now .. 6 years later .. not a day goes by that I do not think about him .. he was my everything .. I have his image tattooed on my back .. so he still follows my every move.
You are all doing a wonderful job guys!
love from Becky XX

Ode to Kelly the Wonder Dog
Old and smelly
With a lump on the side of your belly
Full of life .. full of fun
Still full of thoughts of being young
See off the cat
Don't let Minnie sit on your mat
Friend of Cello
Our funny little ginger fellow
Black and brown and grey in between
A finer dog there never has been
You had to leave us today
Soxy T Pussycat wanted you to come and play
In Soxy's capable paws we will leave you
Even though it has caused us to grieve you
Kelly the Wonder Dog .. you were friendly to the end
And even after the end .. you remain my best friend.

SOXY was with me for 9 years of my life .. he was my absolute best friend in the whole wide world .. I was able to speak to him about anything and everything and he had a way of looking at me which suggested he understood everything.
He was adopted as a kitten from Peninsula Animal Aid and from the first day he came into our house .. he was in our hearts.
Soxy was best friends with our dog .. Kelly who was also adopted from PAA and he had a variety of sweet little ways including telling me when it was time for bed and demonstrating his desperate need to go outside by meowing a meow which sounded suspiciously like ME OUT .. his me out would get louder and louder until you could stand it no longer and you had to let him out.
He was a wonderful cat and I am thankful for every day I had with him .. sadly in 2004 .. he got sick and deteriorated rapidly .. we still are unsure of what caused his illness but he may have been poisoned by a cane toad.
While I miss him every day and he still has a very special place in my heart .. I am now the happy owner of 2 cats and Miss Kelly the Corgi X (15 years old) is still going strong after.
Thank you very much for posting my belated memorial
Kind regards
Tracey

Our beautiful Mia went to sleep today 10th July 2008.
 |
MIA arrived at the shelter just over 3 months ago .. after a day we soon realised Mia had a problem with one leg .. it was cancer .. Mia would stay with us now until the pain was too much for her .. she was loved by all .. she waited in her yard for her daily walk and cuddle .. Mia longed for the attention from us all at PAA .. she has certainly touched all our hearts in these pass few months .. but today it was time to say Good-Bye .. Rest In Peace Darling. |

RAJAH 25th March 2008 - 15th November 2008
His old legs finally could hold him no longer .. Cagney and I stayed with Rajah .. cuddling and petting him till his last breath on Saturday morning at 9.06AM .. Rajah was in our life 10 months and after Justin's Justice it seemed Rajah always belonged to our family .. like all our pets he became one of the pampered boys .. much loved!!
Rajah loved his balls and without fail we delighted in watching him .. Rajah was our very own siren .. every time he heard a siren he would let out a howl .. when there was thunder and lightning Rajah raced outside to give the thunder god a piece of his mind .. than come inside all wet and expect his rub down and a treat for his good work !!!!!!!!!! .. Rajah loved laying next to Cagney watching T.V on the sofa .. we are a sad family without our Rajah ....

Cleo
Died: 10th August 2009
Dear PAA
Earlier in January 2009 we adopted a lovely cheeky little 8 month old black cat that PAA had named Bella .. she picked us for her family.
Cleo climbed right on to our youngest little girls' stroller and we knew we had found the new addition to our family.
We took her home to meet our other furry family member and as her name was Bella we re-named our PAA kitty Cleo.
Cleo had a rough start to life .. being in and out of shelters a few times but she quickly made herself at home and became great friends with our Bella.
She would often play soccer out in the back yard with our 3 girls by chasing the ball from one end to the other .. Bella and Cleo would come in at night and chase each other up and down the hallway.
But she preferred to spend most of her days in doors and happily slept on the shelves in our garage .. she would come and sit at the table at dinner time and wait for the girls to feed her scraps .. even eating her vegetables!
One night in early August, as we pulled out of the garage, Cleo was laying un-noticed in the driveway and for a reason we will never know .. she did not move out of the way of the car.
We took her straight to the vet and although her injuries did not seem too bad (broken leg) she had other damage that the vet could not explain and could not guarantee our little girl would recover 100% from.
Perhaps this is why she did not move away from the car............sadly we made the heart breaking decision to let her go .. we brought her home and buried her in her favourite spot in the garden.
We have found some peace with the fact that Cleo had the chance to know a loving home and feel blessed that she chose us to show her that.
We miss you Cleo Rest In Peace! xox
